Yesterday, while walking with a Hinomaru design on my cap, I was approached by the police.
One of the reasons was the Japanese flag on my cap.
When the conversation turned to why I was wearing it, my answer came naturally:
“Because this is Japan. And because I love Japanese tradition.”
My conversation with the officer was normal and respectful. After being asked several questions, I simply said that, for us to have a good conversation, I would appreciate it if the officer briefly identified himself first.
The encounter was short, calm, and ended quickly.
I do not consider the police my enemy. I also understand that police work is difficult.
Still, I hope a day will come when Japanese people and foreigners alike can walk through the streets wearing the Hinomaru or other symbols of Japan without feeling afraid of being stared at, questioned, or feeling that they must explain themselves.
Everyone may have a different reason for wearing the Hinomaru.
Mine is very simple.
Because I love Japan.
Because I love Japanese festivals.
Because I want to respect the history and traditions of this country.Perhaps by the time that day arrives, I may no longer be living in Japan.
But I still hope to see it.
A day when wearing a symbol of this country is not treated as something unusual, but simply as part of the landscape of Japan.
Police and citizens. Japanese and foreigners.
Rather than beginning with suspicion, I hope we can begin with conversation. It was only a brief encounter that began with a small Hinomaru on a cap.
Yet behind that small moment lies a much larger question:
What kind of Japan do we want to leave for tomorrow?
